Satanic Celebratory Holidays
February 15th - Lupercalia
by Fabrizio Di Satana
Lupercalia romanticizes wolf-lore of yore. And even though a wolf-man prompts our memories of the year's later season of death, an arrow through the heart and the pangs of love around Valentine's Day on February 14 has its roots in Lupercalia. The carnival of the Luperci finds its origins during the heyday of the Roman Empire. Tragic monsters agonize when the perennial ceremonies of love and procreation come around. Religious rites of Rome's Luperci priesthood offered females reproductive powers with stylized and pantomimed whippings to prompt their potency to spawn progeny. Hygiene, athletic prowess, and fertility were venerated during Lupercalia extravaganzas with sacrificial offerings of goats and Luperci priests dressing up in the pelts of wolves to perform their functions. Honoring wolves goes back to the tradition of Rome's founding fathers Romulus and Remus. These young twins were found feeding from the milk of a nurturing she-wolf after they had been forsaken in a cave by their conniving uncle King Amulius. He had seen the two brothers as a menace to his rule and sought to do away with them by drowning them in the Tiber River.
