Historical Rome celebrated the holiday of Agonalia on the 9th of January to pay homage to the God Janus of Rome. Janus was an icon of doorways, gates, duality, transformation, phases of time, crossings, appearances, and disappearances. Emblems of great God Janus impress two faces with one countenance peering to the left or the past, while the other looks to the right or the future. This is from whence modern New Year parties derive and the writing of New Year's Resolutions. I stood in an ancient gateway while on vacation sensing what was behind me and what is in front of me. Feeling the presence of the generations that were living before the current generation giving honor to ancestors pleases Janus, God of Gateways.
